Hair Porosity &
How to Layer Your Products

Hair porosity describes how readily your hair takes in and holds onto moisture. Understanding how your hair behaves can help you make better decisions about product texture, layering, conditioning, and sealing.

Important: Porosity is a helpful guide—not a strict rule. Products labeled or recommended for a particular porosity may simply have characteristics that tend to work well for that hair type. Nyche Hair products can be incorporated into routines across different porosities based on your individual hair needs.
First Things First

What Does Porosity Mean?

Porosity can affect how quickly your hair becomes wet, how products feel on your strands, and how easily your hair holds onto moisture.

LOW

Low Porosity

The cuticle tends to be more compact, so water and products may take longer to penetrate. Products can sometimes feel as though they're sitting on the surface of the hair.

MED

Medium Porosity

Hair generally takes in and retains moisture relatively well. Medium-porosity hair may tolerate a wider variety of product textures and layering methods.

HIGH

High Porosity

The cuticle may allow water in readily but can also lose moisture more quickly. Richer conditioning, reduced damage, and sealing layers may be especially helpful.

Conditioner vs. Deep Conditioner

On a regular wash day, follow shampoo with your rinse-out conditioner to soften, condition, and help with detangling.

When your hair needs additional care, you can incorporate a deep conditioner or hair mask. How often you deep condition should depend on your hair's needs rather than following one schedule for everyone.

Nyche Hair treatment options include the Banana & Coconut Butter Melt Mask for rich moisture and softness, the Chebé Leave-In Treatment for moisturizing care and length-retention support, and the Miracle Mask when your routine needs more strengthening support.

Your Hair Sounds Like Low Porosity Hair

Your answers suggest that your hair may take longer to absorb water and products. Lightweight layering can help reduce unnecessary buildup, while warm water or gentle steam during conditioning may help your routine feel more effective.

Your Suggested Nyche Hair Routine
  1. 1
Cleanse Nourish & Restore Shampoo for regular wash days.
  2. 2
Clarify When Needed Use Clarify & Balance when your hair needs a deeper reset from buildup.
  3. 3
Condition Follow cleansing with Moisture Miracle Rinse-Out Conditioner.
  4. 4
Deep Condition Try Banana & Coconut Butter Melt Mask when your hair needs additional moisture and softness.
  5. 5

  6. 6

Low Porosity Tip: Avoid piling on heavy layers simply because your hair feels dry. Sometimes the issue is buildup preventing water-based moisture from reaching the hair effectively.

Your Hair Sounds Like High Porosity Hair

Your answers suggest that your hair may take in moisture quickly but lose it relatively quickly as well. Richer conditioning and leave-in products can help, while reducing excessive heat, chemical damage, and rough manipulation can also be important.

Your Suggested Nyche Hair Routine
  1. 1
Cleanse Use Nourish & Restore Shampoo for your regular wash-day routine.
  2. 2
Clarify When Needed Use Clarify & Balance when excess oils, butters, or styling products have created buildup.
  3. 3
Condition Follow cleansing with Moisture Miracle Rinse-Out Conditioner.
  4. 4
Deep Condition / Strengthen Try Miracle Mask when your hair needs strengthening support. For rich moisture and softness, alternate with Banana & Coconut Butter Melt Mask based on your hair's needs.
  5. 5
Richer Moisture Try Nourish Leave-In Cream, Honey Butter Daily Moisturizer, or another richer Nyche Hair leave-in based on your preferred styling routine.
  6. 6
Seal Apply a small amount of Soothe Hair Oil to help seal your moisturizing layers and add lubrication and shine.
High Porosity Tip: If your hair is highly porous because of heat or chemical damage, products can support the feel and manageability of the hair, but preventing additional damage is also an important part of your routine.
