Hair Porosity &
How to Layer Your Products
Hair porosity describes how readily your hair takes in and holds onto moisture. Understanding how your hair behaves can help you make better decisions about product texture, layering, conditioning, and sealing.
What Does Porosity Mean?
Porosity can affect how quickly your hair becomes wet, how products feel on your strands, and how easily your hair holds onto moisture.
Low Porosity
The cuticle tends to be more compact, so water and products may take longer to penetrate. Products can sometimes feel as though they're sitting on the surface of the hair.
Medium Porosity
Hair generally takes in and retains moisture relatively well. Medium-porosity hair may tolerate a wider variety of product textures and layering methods.
High Porosity
The cuticle may allow water in readily but can also lose moisture more quickly. Richer conditioning, reduced damage, and sealing layers may be especially helpful.
Conditioner vs. Deep Conditioner
On a regular wash day, follow shampoo with your rinse-out conditioner to soften, condition, and help with detangling.
When your hair needs additional care, you can incorporate a deep conditioner or hair mask. How often you deep condition should depend on your hair's needs rather than following one schedule for everyone.
Nyche Hair treatment options include the Banana & Coconut Butter Melt Mask for rich moisture and softness, the Chebé Leave-In Treatment for moisturizing care and length-retention support, and the Miracle Mask when your routine needs more strengthening support.
